Dan Rather, plaintiff

Dan Rather made a name for himself in the 1980s when he became anchor of CBS Evening News. He was not always a big-timer, however. Growing up in Houston, Texas, Rather attended Sam Houston State University with the intent of playing football. He ended up with a degree in journalism.

Rather had an illustrious career chronicling events such as Nixon's resignation, the Vietnam War and the September 11th attacks. On Sept. 4, 2004, he anchored a story about George W. Bush's military involvement. The documents used in the report were questionable, which led to Rather's resignation and a $70 million lawsuit against CBS.

Everyone from professionals in the journalism field to students at SHSU have had something to say about the lawsuit. The story and subsequent lawsuit also brings up countless questions about journalism and ethics.

The SOJOURNER news team at Sam Houston State University has chronicled the situation with Dan Rather and put together an series of enlightening articles in order to help those understand what is going on with our famous alumnus.
